"The word Panchakarma comes from classical Ayurvedic texts and means literally 'five actions'. Subtly harmonising purification procedures dissolve metabolic waste products and environmental toxins from the body's tissues in a gentle and effective way and eliminate them from the physiology. These extremely pleasant relaxing treatments enliven the bodies own self-healing powers bringing about a profound and lasting rejuvenation. Panchakarma can be taken for as few as three consecutive days to a more common five-day treatment and as many as thirty days."
What is Panchakarma?
To maintain health and alleviate diseases, ayurved advocates “Panchakarma”- a powerful purification process- to eliminate mental, physical and emotional toxins.
Panchakarma literally means “pancha” meaning five and “karma” meaning actions or therapies. It is a five-fold purification therapy aimed at correcting the imbalance of bodily humors viz. vata, pitta and kapha in order to maintain their inherent equilibrium. This therapy is widely used to cure neurological ailments like paralysis, arthritis, rheumatic pain, skin problems, mental disorders, etc. It is also used for rejuvenation.
These five therapies are vaman (therapeutic emesis), virechan (therapeutic purgation), basti (therapeutic enema), nasya (therapeutic evacuation of vitiated dosha from head) and rakta mokshana (therapeutic blood cleansing). These main therapies are preceded by some pre-treatments like snehana or abhyanga (oleation, herbal oil massage) and swedana (herbal steam bath).
Various Panchakarma Procedures:
Abhyanga / Snehana
Abhyanga is a whole body massage with specific herbal oils. Abhyanga has much deeper and far-reaching effects than an ordinary massage. Abhyanga achieves deepest healing effects by naturally harmonizing Body-Mind & Spirit. This massage is usually followed by a medicated steam bath (swedan). It is one of the most rejuvenating treatments of ayurveda.
Abhyang increases tissue strength, improves blood circulation, rejuvenates the whole body, removes the cellulite, beautifies the skin, delays aging, induces sound sleep, promotes vitality, pacifies vata imbalance, reduces stress and removes toxins.
Swedana
It is a process to induce sweating by using steam of special herbs specific to the dosha and ailments of a person. This herbal steam bath opens the pores and flushes and cleanses the system through the skin.
Abhyang reduces pain in the body, eliminates toxins, promotes lightness, reduces stiffness and beautifies the skin.
"Pancha Karma is strong reduction therapy. It is the single most powerful healing therapy utilized in Ayurveda. It is applied for the purpose of eliminating ama (toxins) and excess doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) in strong patients and is beneficial in the healing of many conditions. Pancha Karma can only be performed on a strong patient and requires proper preparation before beginning. Pancha Karma is a process, not a procedure. It is the process of removing ama and excess doshas from the body and mind and then rebuilding the internal strength (ojas) of the body. There are three components to the process of Pancha Karma: purva karma (techniques for preparation), pradhana karma (techniques for elimination) and prashat karma (follow-up techniques for rejuvenation)."
"Pancha Karma begins with proper preparation to ready the body for the elimination of ama. This process, called purva karma, can last from 3 -21 days. The second phase of Pancha Karma is the actual elimination of ama and excess dosha. These are the main practices of Pancha Karma. This phase is called pradhan karma. This process takes anywhere from 5 - 10 days. The final phase of Pancha Karma, called praschat karma, is considered follow-up practices to rebuild the strength of the body. This phase of care takes 21 - 28 days. Hence, a complete program of Pancha Karma, properly applied, can take nearly two months. Each phase is essential to the process and failure to properly preform any one of them decreases the results."
